Curious about riding an e-bike? Let us help you explore Skagway via e-bike!
Never ridden an electric bike before? Here's everything you need to know before your Skagway e-bike adventure.
You've arrived in Skagway, Alaska, surrounded by towering mountains, historic buildings, and the breathtaking scenery of the Inside Passage. You're ready to explore—but there's just one question holding you back:
"Is it hard to ride an e-bike?"
If you've never ridden an electric bicycle before, you might be wondering whether you'll be able to handle it, how the motor works, or if you'll feel comfortable navigating the streets of a new destination.
The good news? E-bikes are designed to make cycling more accessible and enjoyable, and many first-time riders find them easy to learn. With a little guidance and a few minutes of practice, you can be on your way to discovering Skagway on two wheels.
At Klondike Electric Bicycles, we welcome riders of all experience levels. Whether you're an experienced cyclist or haven't been on a bicycle in years, we're here to help you get comfortable and enjoy your ride.
Let's break down everything you need to know before your first e-bike adventure!
1. Are E-Bikes Easy to Ride?
Yes! For most people who are comfortable riding a traditional bicycle, learning to ride an e-bike is relatively straightforward.
An electric bike operates much like a regular bicycle. You still steer using the handlebars, pedal with your feet, and use the brakes to slow down and stop. The main difference is that an electric motor provides assistance while you pedal.
That extra assistance can make it easier to:
Ride up hills and inclines.
Travel longer distances with less physical effort.
Maintain a comfortable pace.
Explore more of a destination without feeling exhausted.
Think of it as having a little extra help when you need it. You are still in control of the bicycle, but the motor helps make your journey more comfortable.
The biggest adjustment for first-time riders is getting used to the motor assistance and how the bike feels when you start pedaling. That's why taking a few minutes to practice before heading out is so important.
2. How Does an Electric Bike Work?
If you've never used an e-bike, the technology might seem intimidating. But the basics are simple!
Most pedal-assist e-bikes use a motor that helps you as you pedal. Depending on the bike and its settings, you can select different levels of assistance.
Here's an easy way to think about it:
Traditional Bicycle
You pedal, and your legs provide all the power needed to move forward.
Electric Bicycle
You pedal, and the motor provides additional assistance to help you move with less effort.
At Klondike Bikes, our team will explain the controls and help you understand how the assistance works before you begin your ride. You don't need to be an e-bike expert before you arrive!
What about the different assistance levels?
Depending on the model you're riding, e-bikes may offer multiple assistance settings. Lower assistance can feel more natural for getting started, while higher assistance can help when you want additional support.
***Our bikes also have a throttle option, which will be explained during your bike safety explanation!***
Our staff can help you become familiar with your specific bike and its controls so you can ride at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
3. What Should First-Time E-Bike Riders Expect?
If you haven't ridden an e-bike before, it's normal to feel a little nervous. You might wonder if the bike will be too heavy, if you'll go too fast, or if you'll know how to stop.
Here are a few things to keep in mind.
The bike may feel different from a regular bicycle
E-bikes are heavier than traditional bicycles because of their motor and battery. You may notice the weight when moving the bike around or getting started. This is one of the main reasons why we require riders to be at least 14 years old and 5 feet tall to ride our bikes. Our bikes range from 50 - 80 lbs. The rider needs to be able to physically handle the weight of the bike.
Once you're riding, the motor assistance can make pedaling easier. Take your time getting familiar with the bike before setting off.
You control your speed
An e-bike doesn't mean you have to ride fast. You can choose a comfortable pace and adjust your assistance as you become more familiar with the bike. That being said, the motor will provide assistance UP to 20 mph.
Remember: The goal is to enjoy the ride, not to win a race.
Balance and steering still matter
An e-bike requires the same basic cycling skills as a traditional bicycle. You should be able to balance, steer, and brake confidently.
If you haven't ridden a bicycle in a long time, practicing in a quiet, open area is a good way to regain confidence before exploring busier roads. We recommend practicing before you arrive in Skagway. You NEED to be comfortable riding a bike for us to allow you to leave the bike shop. SAFETY is the most important part of your ride!
An important thing to note is that we do not have a hospital in Skagway! We do not want your trip to end with a very expensive helicopter ride to the nearest hospital.
4. Is Skagway a Good Place for a First E-Bike Ride?
Skagway offers an incredible setting for exploring by bicycle. From its Gold Rush history to its mountain views, there's a lot to discover beyond the cruise ship docks.
However, being a beginner doesn't mean every route or road will be suitable for your experience level. Terrain, traffic, weather, and your comfort with cycling should all be considered when planning your ride.
At Klondike Electric Bicycles, we can help you understand the route and the type of riding involved, so you can choose an experience that matches your interests and comfort level.
Explore Skagway's Gold Rush history

Your first e-bike ride should be about discovering somewhere new—not worrying about whether you're doing everything perfectly.
6. Tips for a Comfortable First E-Bike Experience
A little preparation can make a big difference in how much you enjoy your ride. Here are our top tips for first-time e-bike riders:
Wear comfortable clothing. Choose clothing that allows you to move freely while pedaling and exploring.
Wear appropriate footwear. Comfortable, secure shoes can help you feel more confident while riding.
Dress for Alaska weather. Skagway's weather can change, so layers and weather-appropriate clothing are helpful.
Start slowly. Give yourself time to get used to the bike and its controls before increasing your pace.
Pay attention to your surroundings. Follow traffic rules, watch for vehicles and pedestrians, and ride according to the conditions.
Choose a route that matches your experience. If you're new to cycling or haven't ridden in a while, talk with our team about the type of route that fits your comfort level.
7. Do You Need to Be in Great Shape to Ride an E-Bike?
One of the biggest advantages of an e-bike is that it can help reduce the effort required to pedal, depending on the assistance level, terrain, and riding conditions.
You don't have to be a competitive cyclist to enjoy an e-bike. However, you should still be comfortable with the basic skills needed to ride a bicycle and be prepared for the physical demands of your chosen route.
An e-bike may be a good option if you want to:
Explore at a manageable pace.
Enjoy the scenery without committing to a strenuous cycling workout.
Cover more ground than you might on foot.
Experience Skagway from a different perspective.
Everyone's comfort level is different. If you're unsure whether a particular ride is right for you, our team can help you understand what to expect.
8. What If I Haven't Ridden a Bike in Years?
You're not alone! Many people are interested in e-bikes but haven't been on a bicycle since childhood—or since their last vacation.
The most important question isn't how long it's been since you last rode. It's whether you can comfortably and safely handle a bicycle today.
Before your trip, consider practicing in a safe, open area where you can work on:
Balancing and steering.
Starting and stopping.
Using the brakes.
Looking around while maintaining control.
Riding at a comfortable pace.
If you don't feel confident riding a bicycle, an e-bike may not be the best first step without additional practice or instruction. Safety and comfort come first.
